THE NAME
The term Farfalloni (Large Butterflies), which is obviuosly understood in the Italian language, is suggested by the wings of a butterfly that the format resembles. They are also called Stricchetti, from a dialect form of the verb stringere (to tighten, or pinch), referring to the central bottelneck pinch, or Galani, from the name of the bowtie used in the elegant smoking jacket or tuxedo. In Umbria, for the same reason, they are called Fiocchetti, for their similarity to a papillon tie, in Abruzzo and in Puglia, Nocchette, from the southern word nocca used to indicate a ribbon tied in a bow.
